How to Hire a Computer Technician

The field of Information Technology requires expertise. Not everyone is equal in competency, responsibility, or work ethic. What is particularly challenging for technicians is that Information Technology (IT) grew up practically over night (compared to fields such as construction and plumbing) and its pace has not slowed down.

Hiring an IT technician (tech) is not like calling someone to cut your lawn or fix a leaky roof. We are talking about data that is stored electronically, and applications that you cannot physically see. We are past the age of installing a few devices, or reinstalling operating systems to make things work.

Things to look for

BulletFirst: Have a web presence. If the technician thinks it is not important to present him/herself online to sell you their services, then not much is happening in the shop.

BulletSecond: You ought to be able to communicate the problem you are experiencing over the phone or via email. The tech should be able to walk you through possible solutions and give you an estimate without simply telling you "bring it to the shop".

BulletThird: In this business, experience is very important. The amount of technical experience a tech has, directly relates to his/her ability to solve your problems. You need a foot soldier. One who has acquired the skills and knowledge over time and is good at solving problems. Viruses, Trojans and Worms are plentiful on the internet, and they come in different forms. They also come when you least expect them to. It is important for a technician to know how software code works, and what is the best medicine for your problem(s).

BulletFourth: Cheap is not the way to go. Reasonable? Yes. Cheap? No. The price you really pay is the price you pay at the end. A good technician should be able to solve 99% of his computer problems, without you having to pay more because of his mistakes. Based on my experience, I can safely say that a 99% success rate is possible. Most good technicians know which job to turn away (that's the other 1%), simply because of what it costs to purchase a new computer and transfer the data.

BulletFifth. Honesty, honesty, honesty. You want to be able to trust someone with your data. Hence the term "Personal Computer" You have to feel this one out yourself. I will say this for educational purposes, and you can quote me on it: "A technician, in the event of carrying out his duties, has no reason to view your personal data in order to fix your problem. Absolutely none!". The only personal information he should see, is how beautiful your desktop image is. That's it.

In conclusion, the best case scenario is to obtain a referral. Referrals are better for us technicians as well. It cuts out the romancing part. Of all the factors to look at, accountability and responsibility are at the top along with technical ability. The bottom line is this; you need someone who can solve your problems quickly at no risk to you.
